History

Based initially on the Rambler Classic platform the Marlin was America's first mid-sized fast back car.  Brought to market to compete with the Mustang it suffered poor sales primarily because it was a large car and AMC was not known, at that time, for fast sporty cars.  Interestingly, a smaller similar styled car predating the Mustang, the Tarpon, built on the American platform was favored by many at AMC.  However, the company's new president felt the larger car would be a good seller and at the time the American platform could not accomodate AMC's current V8 engines.  During the last year of production, 1967, the Marlin was built on the Ambassador platform.  The Marlin was replaced in 1968 with the AMC Javelin which was smaller, sportier looking and could be fitted with AMC's newly developed Gen II V8's.
