History

Like many early motorcar manufacturers, Phoenix started out with motorcycles, which were named by the company's Belgian founder, Joseph van Hooydonk, after the Phoenix Cycle Club, of which he was a member. These had Minerva engines and were made in the company's workshop in Holloway Road, North London. The company's first car, was a tricar, the Phoenix Trimo, which had a basket seat between the front two wheels. In 1914 the car made its first car proper, with a single-cylinder, 699cc engine, and then progressed to a transverse engine with van-Hooydonk-patented two-speed hub in 1908.
