Reshaping the front bumper

Tags: bumpers custom fenders metalwork welding

As Volvo Amazon aficionados will know, the Amazon front bumper is a three piece affair, with a pair of overriders covering up the join.
The plan, was to forget the overriders (mine had handily lost them some time ago), and one-piece the bumper.

Couple of problems with this. The first is that the bumpers rarely fit the body properly, being at all sorts of angles thanks to differing manufacturing tolerances and beaten up mounts.

So you might understand how it took Mark at Romance of Rust more than a couple of hours (a lot more) to get it lined up with the wings, both horizontally and vertically.

The other problem is the overriders cover up the fact that there's no continuous bumper line. Basically, the centre piece has a different line to the side pieces.

So when the bumper was welded together, the result was less than stunning. Until Lance spent some quality time with a welding torch and a hammer.

Now the result is, I think, rather special, with strong, attractive and seamless lines.

What about the rear bumper? Well that'll have to be for another post.
