Engine rebuild: progress report
Tags: carb crank heads holley valves
Yesterday I dug out the old heads I had on the race engine that blew up, to see what sort of shape they were in, as the stock heads that I'd got were starting to look slightly problematic (the valve guides need liners of some sort), particularly as far as rebuilding the whole thing for £500.
The heads came as part of the Speedway claimer engine, and were described as 'sleeper heads' by Speedway, meaning they're stock, but with a few tweaks, such as 1.60/2.02 valves, double springs, roller rockers and screw-in studs.
Though the engine blow-up had been pretty major (a 1 1/2 inch piece of piston went through one of the cylinder walls), I thought there was a chance that the heads might still be serviceable.
I haven't quite finished dismantling them, but so far there's at least an evens chance they will be. One of the heads has now been completely stripped, and actually looks very good -- the valve guides are in great shape, the deck is level, and it all looks good.
The other one was on the side that bore the brunt of the damage, and has one, possibly two, valves that need replacing, and as I haven't removed those ones yet, still less checked how level the head is, it's still too early to say.
I also took the Holley off the intake manifold. The manifold will be going off for a quick bit of blasting next week -- it's a Holley 300-36 -- basically a z28 replica, which meant it was legal in the race-series I was running.
Finally, I may have a possible line on a replacement crank. Will know more next week.
