Engine rebuild: more (slow) progress
Tags: 350 engine rebuild valves
It's been a while since I've posted on the rebuild of the 350 Chevy from the Camaro -- in part because progress has been pretty slow.
I got the reciprocating assembly back from the machine shop eventually, but they'd done a pretty damn good job -- and had to work hard to get it all to balance (I'll try to post a pic of the pistons in a few days.
Meanwhile, I've been after some UNC rethreathing tools to clean up the threads in the block, but they seem to be rarer than hen's teeth in the UK. In theory Snap-On have them (and they're not expensive, either, just a couple of pounds each), but after 2 months of trying to buy them from them I've given up. Just hopeless.
I've also started rebuilding the heads. These are the ones that came with the Speedway Claimer engine that blew up, but are in pretty good condition.
I've had to replace (via several trips to Real Steel) one of the exhaust valves valves which was pretty bent, and all of the inlet valves, as the flat-faced Manley ones in the head are no longer produced and have apparently been replaced by dished valves.
Obviously I couldn't mix them, as that'd mean different compression ratios, and so I've had to splash out for a compete set.
Anyway, I spent a longish day Thursday grinding all he valves in, and so next week after a bit of a clean I should be able to do a trial fit to see if I need any shims.
