Down to bare metal

Tags: bodywork customising restoration rust

Dropped off the Amazon at Lance's on Friday, with no problem, except that a couple of days before I was taking some 'before' shots of the whole of the car and just could not get the bonnet closed -- first time it's ever happened.

Anyway ten minutes later it was sorted, but it just confirmed that the inner wings were out of alignment.

I'm going to post a whole load of the before shots later on tonight, together with the first pics of the 'during' phase, so it should build into quite a nice record of the resto.

Went over on Monday afternoon to see how things were progressing, and the whole outer skin was pretty much down t bare metal. There were a few dodgy bits, but t be honest not much more than I was expecting -- the car is after all 42 years old and has lived on a London street for the past 18 years, with not much ore than the occasional patch to deal with the wear and tear.

The nearside door, as suspected, was pretty much useless, as is the wing on that side. The front panel also needed to go, and so did that bonnet. The nose was in a bit of a state, and had been filled to hide the problem, and the side nearest the windscreen had laminated and was very thin. All in all, it's going to be no more expensive to get a new one, and I think that's what we'll do.

The new wings had actually arrived from Amazon Cars already (they seem very efficient), and Lance was going to start work on those today.

Meantime we've been firming up some of the ideas about how to improve the rear end, but I'll save that for another post.
