This 1950 Ford Mercury Coupe was bought on ebay, from a guy just outside Detroit, in late November 2006. It has had a very mild custom done sometimes in the early 80's which including ripping out the old powerplant and installing a 351 Windsor engine, the door handles have been shaved as has the bonnet and boot.

The car was shipped out to a friends place in California in March 2007 where we have started the restoration/custom work.

The idea for the car is to do a very mild custom, similar to an early Barris custom. With maybe a maximum of 2" taken out of the roof (see blue tape in some of the photos), and painting it it's original dark metallic blue which will suit the car much more than the 80's yellow its in now.

I'm looking forward to my trip to LA in a week, the new fenders from Mercuryland finally turned up so I'll get to see how good the fit is.
I have to catch up with Tim who is going to be doing the engine work and hopefully helping Martyn out on the body work as I think he's been distracted by other projects...so time to get this this back on track and ready for next summer (I'm sure I said that last year!).

I'm back in LA for a few days and have sold the flathead...it's gone to a Swiss guy who is building a 30's Hot Rod Pick up truck.
I've also posted a couple of better photos of the body.
We are still waiting on the new rockers from Mercuryland, they sold the last set even though it was earmarked for me...they forgot! Anyway a new set has been ordered and will be on it's way soon.

After taking the trans cover off to access some of those difficult to get to bolts I managed to pull the engine out of the car. It seems it might be a 69 Mustang engine, but once I decode the engine number I can confirm this. The trans will be scrapped, I'm now thinking of using a 9" rear end in the car, upgrading the brake and adding a stiffer rollbar/swaybar (front and rear). Tim work works with Martyn will be working on the engine rebuild (he's a Ford man), so I'm hoping to have updates on the rebuild in ...read more

Photos from today's attempt to lift the engine out...but there are two stubborn bolts holding the cross member in place...I'll tackle them in the morning and get that sucker out of there tomorrow. What a dirty, greasy, dusty job it is taking an engine and transmission out of an old car! I've also added a couple of photos of the floor well as I've discovered lot's of little patches with a ton of screws holding them in place...why they didn't do a proper job I don't know, it must have taken them as long to screw it down as it ...read more

More photos as I clear the engine bay in preparation to take the engine out of the car, I also discover more rust in the foot wells...not a good sign.

I'm back here in Los Angeles and finally doing some work on the car.
Today I managed to strip the front end out and take all the unwanted wiring out in preparation to remove the engine next week. More to come later next week...
