Bought this on eBay, sight unseen, in a moment of madness, and have never regretted it.

Was imported by a guy in Bournemouth, who'd always wanted one. He imported it from the US, from the original owners, but had to sell it, because his wife didn't like driving a left-hooker.

It's got four captain's seats (plus bench which folds down to a bed), mood lighting and a quilted headliner. Fully Ziebarted, though the UK weather's now starting to take its toll on the exterior.

The 5.0L V8 runs nicely, though the elctrics are beginning to get a bit temperamental due to the heavy use its getting while the Amazon's undergoing its resto.

More on that troublesome dizzy

Quick update to my last post. Turned out the problem on the new dizzy (an MSD StreetFire HEI unit) was the module had gone. Easy enough to fix you'd think, which is what the guys at American Auto car did, testing it was working OK. However, when I turned up fit it (simple job, after all) suddenly I had no ignition again. This time it turned out to be the coil that had gone. So, another week later, I get the dizzy back and fit it again -- and this time it seems to work. However, I'm taking no chances ...read more

Truth to tell, I've been taking the van for granted, using it to move the Camaro's engine around while it was being rebuilt and generally abusing it as my daily driver.Well, yesterday it was payback time, with a breakdown on a busy dual carriageway (with no hard shoulder!), just outside Heathrow. I'd been picking up a new water pump for the Camaro from Real Steel, and suddenly, stuck in heavy traffic, the engine died. First thought was a fuel problem, but there was half a tank left, and opening the hood, no obvious loose pipes. And although the engine bay ...read more

Intermittent electrical problems still... intermittent

Spent a few hours down at my lock-up polishing my Amazon's carbs, and took the opportunity to have a look at the van's electics, particularly the driver's side window, which keeps getting stuck (in the down position, obviously). Once the panel was off and I could access the wiring, the window behaved faultlessly of course. My suspecion however that it might be the internal contacts in the motor, as it seems to stick at a similar position each time. What I did see however, was quite a bit of rust, both behind the panel and underneath the door. Put some ...read more

More electrical problems

Tags: air-conditioning daily-driver electrics

This time it's the fan/aircon. Not great timing with the driver's side window going (see here) and the weather starting to heat up.

Guess it's the strain of being used as a daily-driver, and all the trips to and from Romance of Rust in connection with the Amazon.

Still, a good day of troubleshooting is called for.

Intermittent problem: driver's side electric window

Tags: electrics window

Nearly a nasty problem last night. Got home from the Classic Cars night at the Ace Cafe only to find that the driver's side electric window was dead. It happened a couple of days ago when I was picking up some parts for the Amazon, but was working 2 or 3 minutes later. This time it was more of a problem -- nighttime; the streets of west London; and me tired. Did not want to be opening up the door at 11pm on the streets of Fulham. Fortunately it fixed itself -- though after 10 minutes this time, though I ...read more
