Got a call from Lance on Tuesday asking how I wanted the rear light fared in. We talked through the various options -- using a different light assembly, using the existing light assembly and placing it flush with the body, or using the existing light assembly and having it sit proud over the body.
We quickly ruled the first one out -- neither Lance nor I are into fussy single lights, and there didn't seem much point in taking a light assembly from another car without a good reason. Leave it with me, Lance said. I want to play around with it.
An hour later, he called back. I've just tried the chrome bezel without the rubber, he said, and I think it'll look really good to merge that with the body. It's brass so I can silver solder it to the body and will look really good, possibly even how it was originally intended by the designers.
It sounded good, so I told him to go for it. Today I went over there to see how it looked. Tasty is the word I'd use. In fact, together with losing the reflectors, it changes the character of the rear end quite a bit, making it much cleaner and more urgent (and that's before we've even filled in the factory seems).
You can't really see it from the photo, but the profile is very nice indeed, with a curve out at the top, giving almost an Alfa-ish feel. I'm really pleased with the job Lance has done on this, and pretty sure it's going to be one of the things that makes the car.
Meanwhile work progresses on the boot. Mark's finished repairing the nearside box section and put the inner, inner wheel-arch in (if that makes sense). The condition of the remanufactured spare-wheel well, however, is not something to get excited about -- looks as if it was knocked off in five minutes by the work experience boy. Still, sure Lance and Mark can knock it into shape (literally).
I removed the headliner today (strangely satisfying) and will head over there again tomorrow, as the paint samples are going to be back from the painters.
