Front suspension update
Tags: restoration shocks springs suspension
Over the past few days, Mark at Romance of Rust has been dismantling the front suspension, so that it can be blasted, powder-coated (I think -- still deciding), and rebuilt.
Given the slightly make-do-and-mend nature of the rest of the car, it didn't really come as a surprise to find that, despite some good pieces I'd had put on over the years, overall it was a bit of a mess.
The wishbones, for example, were mismatched, as were some of the bushes. Not the ideal recipe for a well-balanced system.
The springs too turned out to have a hairline crack in them (not a problem as we're replacing these with progressive springs), although the shocks (Bilsteins) were actually in pretty good shape.
The pictures (thanks Hugh for taking these) show the components after dismantling -- Mark assures me he's got a system for reassembling them -- and also the dolly Mark made to move the car about without it (the paint shop we're using is just a hundred yards down the road).
