redranch's 1967 Volvo Amazon 220 (station-wagon)

Rate this vehicle

This 1967 Amazon Estate was bought from Lance at Romance of Rust (www.romanceofrust.co.uk). He owned the car for about 17 years, it originally came from California.

Previously owned by Lt.Commander Robert Sloane (N.A.T.O.) stationed at Ruislip. Car purchased by him in California and used in (and registered) in Maryland before he was posted to the UK where he brought the car with him.
It has the B20 engine with overdrive fitted. A lightened crank. Fuelie head with Volvo race part valves (possibly sodium filled). Recent steel timing gears (approx 10,000 miles ago) performance cam and followers. Down draught Weber on Pierce inlet manifold. Bilsteins shocks all round, Calif lower and upper tailgates, I.P.D. front anti-roll bar and a performance exhaust system

Will go off the clock (can't hear the stereo), but docile too.

The initial idea was to get stuck in and fix the visible rust...but as I have too many ongoing projects in much worse condition I'll do it when I can as the car runs and drives and will be my daily work horse until I get around to fixing it up properly.

With fresh snow on the ground and a sunny day, I went for a spin in the old girl to try out her winter tyres...touch wood, all went well.
The last few weeks I'm getting a very high temp reading after about 5mins of driving, and as it hits melting point the temp gauge levels out and then seems to read a normal temp...I'll have to investigate this slightly odd behaviour soon.

At last I have some new winter tyres for the car, well snow is on the way and you can't be too careful.

The tyres seem very skinny, but they do at least have some tread on them.

I took the car for a drive in the mountains behind the apartment today.

Took a few photos of the car in it's element...just wish it were still summer though:

So I've had the car over in Switzerland for a couple of months and everything has been fine, apart from the passenger window that a friend (who's not used to the ways of the older car) wound down the wrong way and the glass dropped into the door...so for a month or so I've had a bit of brown cardboard wedge in to hold it up. Which was fine in the warmer weather, but now it's getting colder isn't ideal. So as the car was booked in to have the heater looked at (leaking into the passenger floor-well), I thought ...read more

The time has come...to drive the car to Switzerland at long last. Did a few bits that needed doing to the car, like putting the door cards back in, adding some sound proofing for the long journey ahead, checking the fluids...stuff like that. Then down to the storage garage to sort through my stuff to drive over (mainly books and records). Wake up on Sunday morning at 3.30am, drive the car to Dover to catch the 5.10am ferry to Calais. Arrived at 1.5hrs later at 7.45am (1 hour ahead), drove off the ferry about 8am and headed for Switzerland. It ...read more
