Built in 1967 by Volvo competition department and brought out to Australia for the Southern Cross International rally. It was imported by British and continental Cara in Sydney. The car came with a modified motor, close ratio gearbox, 4.88:1 LSD, 90 litre tank, fibreglass seat, strengthened shell, competition tacho, and a host of other modifications. It finished 11th outright and first in class in the 1969 Southern cross driven by Ossie Jackson. Ossie campaigned the car for a couple of seasons in the NSW Championship and then it was sold, driven on the road and then stored for 25 years. George Minassian (Tweed Heads, NSW) bought the car and began a mild restoration which was completed by Andrew White (Darwin, Australia) the present owner. Andrew added a roll cage to make the car legal for racing and rallying and from 1998 to 2002 raced the car in Improved Production racing. The car was then specifically prepared for the World's greatest tarmac rally, Targa Tasmania - 2000km, 300 entries, five days and ebtered from 2003-2008. The car ran in the exact specification it left the factory save for some HIF7 SU carbies. The car produced 112hp at the rear wheels and in three successive years (2005-2007) finished 10th, 7th then 6th in the overall classic competition (150 cars, 1946-1992). The car has been retired from active competition and is now being sensitively re-furbished with new close ratio gearset, a little bodywork and the original rear axle. There can't be many orignal Volvo factory cars left. It is a rare example of an original works prepared rally car from the 1960's and is still a very competitive vehicle.
